Nominate your neighbour: 2020 Winners announced!
Back in October, we put a call out to WA households to nominate somebody who has brought joy to their street or community in some way for a chance to receive some Christmas cheer.
We would like to say an inflatable Rudolph sized thank you to everybody who nominated somebody during this campaign.
Now, after a challenging selection process, three worthy winners have been chosen! These three households received a visit from our Synergy Elves to decorate their home with Christmas lights – and will have their electricity bills paid for three months*.
Ron from Halls Head
Generous-hearted retiree Ron invests a lot of time and effort into fundraising for charities including Red Cross and Peel Connect, and helping people in need, particularly those experiencing homelessness. He was nominated for all he does for the community and for never being too busy to help out a neighbour, friend or stranger.
Ron was thrilled to get a call from our team.
“It was very, very much a surprise – I was just putting up my Christmas lights when I got the call,” he said. “I usually do Christmas lights because it gives people something bright and nice to look at, it creates atmosphere and helps the whole community.”
Mark, Sam and Alexis from Doubleview
Housemates Mark, Sam and Alexis were nominated for bringing joy to not only their neighbours, but to people across the world in isolation at home.
Despite a challenging year with event cancellations, this musical trio joined forces to perform Saturday concerts celebrating a range of musical styles. They started playing out the front for their neighbours, and then began sharing their music globally through social media live streams.
“We really got to know our neighbours through Covid and were able to connect with our community,” said Alexis. “We are very fortunate for our household and it was so nice to be able to do something for the community and others during such an uncertain time.”
Deirdre from Shoalwater
Deirdre was nominated for being a dedicated volunteer within her community, including her local branch of the Country Women’s Association, and an advocate for mental health awareness. She was nominated for going above and beyond for others and for always making others in her local community feel welcome with her warmth and generosity.
“I strongly believe that mental health care is every bit as important as physical health care and should be as easily accessible,” said Diedre. “The current stigmas surrounding mental health don’t serve our community. I try my hardest to always speak openly about how we handle our mental well-being so that others know they too can seek the help that they need."
“It's humbling to know you've impacted someone enough for them to nominate you,” she said. “After such a tough year for everyone we are so excited to have Synergy literally light up our lives. We're looking forward to a really bright Christmas to finish off a challenging year.”
Congratulations to our winners and thank you again to everybody who nominated a local hero within their community as part of the Nominate Your Neighbour competition!
